The papal plane landed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland during afternoon. Unfortunately, Benedict did not kiss the ground like the great Pope John Paul II did it.

This is the first visit of the pope in United States since September 11 and also the first time Pope Benedict visits the country as well.

Bloomberg adds:

The pope’s trip, with a dozen scheduled events in Washington and New York, will also feature a United Nations address, a talk to the nation’s bishops, and Mass for more than 40,000 at the Washington Nationals baseball stadium
